Visa Introduction
The carer visa reflects immigration principles relating to reunion of relatives in recognition of kinship ties and the bonds of mutual dependency and support within families. It is for persons outside Australia who are seeking a permanent visa on the basis of being the carer of:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident or
- eligible New Zealand citizen
With the carer visa, the visa applicant can:
- move to or stay in Australia as a permanent resident
- work and study in Australia
- travel to and from Australia for 5 years
- The applicant must be sponsored by your relative or their partner for your first 2 years in Australia
- The applicant must provide care for a relative, or a member of their family who lives with them, who has no reasonable access to care options in Australia
Sponsorship requirements
- Sponsorship application-AUD nil to apply. But the sponsor have financial responsibilities.
- The sponsor, or the sponsor's, spouse or de facto partner, can sponsor a relative to stay in Australia and provide the sponsor or the sponsor's family members who lives with the sponsor with care for an ongoing medical condition
- The sponsor must be a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- The sponsor must agree to support the visa applicant and any family members who come with them for 2 years after grant of the visa
Legislative Requirements
At time of application
- The visa applicant claims to be a carer of an Australian relative of the applicant (116.211 (1))
- Australian relative, in relation to an applicant, means a relative of the applicant who is an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen.(116.211 (2)
- The applicant is sponsored by the Australian relative or the spouse or de factor partner of the Australian relative (116.212)
At time of decision
- The visa applicant is a carer of an Australian relative of the applicant (116.221)
- The sponsorship referred to in clause 116.212 has been approved by the Minister and is still in force.(116.222)
